Dark-eyed Junco
Dark-eyed Junco: Medium-sized sparrow with considerable geographic color variation, although all exhibit a pink bill, dark eyes, white belly, and dark-centered tail with white outer feathers. Gray-headed form has gray head, rump, breast, and sides, and rust-brown back. Slate-colored form is slate-gray overall with darker head. Oregon form has black hood, chestnut-brown back and buff-brown flanks. White-winged form is blue-gray overall and shows two white wing bars. Pink-sided form is blue-gray with darker wings and pink-gray flanks. Female of each form resembles male but is usually paler. Juveniles of all forms are heavily streaked brown with darker heads, white bellies, and white outer tail feathers.

Dark-rumped Petrel: Medium-sized petrel with dark slate-gray upperparts and white underparts. Sides of neck and underwing margins are dark. Bill is relatively short, black, and hooked. Tail is white and wedge-shaped. Sexes are similar. AKA Galapagos Petrel.

Dark-sided Flycatcher
Dark-sided Flycatcher: Small flycatcher with dark gray-brown upperparts and white underparts with dark gray-brown wash on sides and flanks. Long gray brown wings have an indistinct pale wing bar. Contrastig white throat with indistinct malar mark extends to the sides forming a partial dull white collar; eye-ring is white, supraloral spot is brown. Wide flat bill is short and dark. Short tail is dark gray brown. Shows dark centers on undertail coverts in flight.
Dickcissel
Dickcissel: Medium-sized, stocky, sparrow-like bird with dark gray back and head, and black-streaked shoulders. Face is gray with yellow eyestripe and breast is yellow. V-shaped bib is black. Wings are brown with chestnut-brown patches. Female and winter adult have brown upperparts and no black bib. Juvenile is brown and streaked.
Double-crested Cormorant
Double-crested Cormorant: Medium-sized cormorant with iridescent black body and orange throat pouch. Western birds have white feather tufts over each eye in early summer. Sexes are similar. Juvenile is brown with buff upper belly and neck, and scaled or mottled upperparts.

Dovekie Breeding Adult: Small seabird (alcid) with black upperparts and hood, white underparts, and stubby, black, sparrow-like bill. Wings are black with thin white trailing edge, visible when folded, and dark underwings. Sexes are similar. Winter adult and juvenile are duller with white throat, chin, and side of neck, and dark neck band.
Downy Woodpecker
Downy Woodpecker: Small woodpecker with black-and-white upperparts and white underparts. Hindcrown patch is red. Tail is black with black-spotted white outer tail feathers. Female and juvenile are similar but without red patch on head.
Dunlin
Dunlin: Medium-sized sandpiper with black-streaked, red-brown upperparts, conspicuous black belly patch, and streaked breast. Bill is long and slightly decurved. Sexes are similar. Winter adult has plain gray upperparts, faintly spotted gray breast and white underparts. Juvenile is browner with a scaled appearance.

Dusky Flycatcher: Small flycatcher with olive-gray upperparts and white- or yellow-tinged underparts. Upper breast has a darker band. Eye has faint eye-ring. Sexes are similar.

Hooked bill is black, feet are gray, and eyes are yellow. Sexes are similar. Juvenile is duller. There is a blue variation of this parakeet as well as the normal green type.
